What is DePIN?

Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks

DePIN

DePIN stands for Decentralized Physical infrastructure Networks. That means physical things/devices that are able to help run, gather data or aid decentralized networks.

So...what is a decentralized network?

A decentralized network is a network (like a data platform), that is run by multiple distributed devices all over the world. It's the opposite to a centralized network that is only run by one entity, for example how a social media app is run by just themselves. A decentralized network is not run by a single entity, it can be run or supported by a community of thousands of people simply providing to the network in various ways.

What is the benefit with DePIN?

There are countless benefits with DePIN and the world are just starting to see these benefits emerge. Technical innovation in the world have so far mostly been through centralized companies/governments building out infrastructure that handle all services or public applications. DePIN projects can run applications that are fueled themselves by people contributing to their network. Enabling, for example, data gathering or access in places traditional companies would not be able to gather data from. It can occur through mobile phones, peoples houses or roof tops, were every day people can deploy DePIN miners that collect data the DePIN companies then can utilize for various technical applications.

Why would anyone use a DePIN miner?

DePIN projects often reward people for deploying DePIN miners that contribute data to their network. The reward are often in crypto tokens.

Examples of DePIN miner use-cases

  • Collection of Weather data through people's weather stations to a decentralized weather network. The collected data is used to improve local and global weather forecasts that can for example be used to predict storms or bad weather.

  • Providing computing power with your mobile phone to a decentralized network. This network can then use the computing power to run various applications.

  • Letting people put up wifi hotspots to enable better internet coverage for anyone around them.

Different sorts of DePIN miners

On this website I have put all my reviews on DePIN miners I have done during the past 4 years.
